Hellenic Studies Chair and Program at York University
One of the main activities of the Hellenic-Canadian Academic Association
of Ontario (HCAAO) is its involvement in the establishment of a permanent
Hellenic Studies Chair and Program in one of the Toronto universities.
Several Hellenic-Canadian associations made efforts towards this direction
in the past.
Recently, the Hellenic Heritage Foundation (HHF), founded by a group of
Greek-Canadian business people, took the initiative to endow a permanent
Hellenic Studies Chair and Program in one of the Toronto universities.
HCAAO worked closely with HHF and submitted a proposal for a
Hellenic Studies Chair and Program.
After negotiations with the two major Toronto universities, a memorandum
of agreement was signed with York University, on January 28, 2000.
The Chair is planned to start its operation in September 2001, or as soon
as an appropriate Chairholder is recruited.
The operation of the Chair and its endowment will give rise to at least
4 half courses (in addition to those currently offered),
research and other academic activities, as well as fellowships
for students pursuing Hellenic studies.
To the left: Prof. Christina Christara, President HCAAO 1999-2001,
addresses the participants of the ceremony for the signing of the
memorandum of agreement for the Hellenic Studies Chair at York University,
January 28, 2000.
HCAAO would like to thank all those who contributed to bringing
this project - the signing of this agreement - to a success;
* York University for their enthusiasm and determination to serve
all communities, including the Greek-Canadian community;
* the Hellenic Heritage Foundation for their generous support and
excellent handling of the matter;
* the Greek Community of Metro-Toronto, as well as the broader
Greek-Canadian community for having given this project a priority status;
* and all the members of our association for providing continuing
advice on academic matters.
As an association,
we have been and continue to be willing to provide advice
on any academic matter that may arise in the course of the
establishment of the Chair and Program,
using our understanding of the needs of the Greek-Canadian community,
as well as our knowledge of and respect for academic principles and
values.

HCAAO co-hosted a lecture by
Dr. Anthony Cutler,
Professor of Byzantine Art at Pennsylvania State University, on
"The Realities of Byzantine Art".
The event took place on
Tuesday, October 14, 1997, at 7:30 p.m., at the
Theatre of the Royal Ontario Museum (R.O.M.).
The lecture was organised by HCAAO,
the Royal Ontario Museum,
the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies and
the Canadian Institute of Balkan Studies
and sponsored by the Consulate General of Greece in Toronto.
The speaker is a professor of Fine Arts
at Pennsylvania State University and a renowned authority
on Byzantine art.
The lecture was presented on the occasion of the permanent
Byzantine Exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum's
Joey and Toby Tannenbaum Gallery of Byzantine Art.
Byzantine artists achieved a unique connection between the ideal
and the real world in the production of icons, jewellery and
liturgical artifacts. In this exquisitely illustrated presentation,
Anthony Cutler explores the relationship between the abstract notion
of beauty and the materials and methods available to the
Byzantine artist with specific reference to the Joey and Toby
Tannenbaum Gallery of Byzantine Art at the Royal Ontario Museum.
The Byzantine empire flourished from AD 324 to 1453. It became the world's first Christian nation, and its inhabitants developed a style of religious art and architecture that influenced every nation it encountered. Its capital, Constantinople, stood where Istanbul stands today.
To the right: St John Chrysostom, detail from a Greek icon c. 1675-1725.

Greek Immigrant Women in Ontario: A Photo History
The official opening of the permanent photo exhibition
"Greek Immigrant Women in Ontario: A Photo History"
by E. Tastsoglou, Prof. of Sociology, Saint Mary's University
and C. Alevizakis, photographer,
took place on
Sunday, November 3, 1996, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. at the
Hellenic Home for the Aged, 33 Winona Drive, Toronto.
To the left: Prof. Vladimiros Papangelakis, President HCAAO 1996-1997,
announces the official opening of the photo exhibition,
at the Hellenic Home for the Aged, November 3, 1996.
This historical exhibition celebrates the contributions of Greek immigrant women to Canadian society. Arriving to Canada full of hope and dreams of a better life, starting new families, working hard in the factory, the office, the restaurant, the school, the University while at the same time raising children and taking care of elderly parents; celebrating weddings, baptisms, namedays, and Easter at family and special gatherings affirming the Greek cultural heritage; building and sustaining communities through participating in cultural, philanthropic and church-related organizations, are all visible and invisible aspects of the Greek immigrant women's lives and indispensable contributions to the Canadian society. The project is the first in the Greek community with a unique focus on the immigrant woman's story.
The exhibition has been made possible with financial support from the Department of Canadian Heritage, in kind contributions by the Daughters of Penelope and other community organizations and, most importantly, with the generous donation of photographs, time, and stories of women in the Greek community and their families. HCAAO played an active role in arranging the donation of the collection to the Hellenic Home and in installing it there.
About 300 attendees crowded in the hall of the Hellenic Home during the event; federal, provincial and local politicians, leaders of community organisations, members of the Greek community, but most importantly the residents of the Hellenic Home.
As part of HCAAO's efforts to reach out to the Greek community
and inform, especially the youth, on the academics' fields of specialization,
Prof. Evangelos Milios, of the Department of Computer Science, York University,
gave a presentation on "Computers and Education".
The event took place on
Sunday, April 21, 1996, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m., at the
Galbraith Building, Room GB 119, University of Toronto.
The presentation was in Greek (Υπολογιστές και εκπαίδευση)
and included live demonstrations of the following:
- Programming in Logo, a language with simple syntax,
commonly used in schools
- A tour of the Internet for everyone, by Prof. Dimitris Hatzinakos,
of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Toronto
- Logomatheia (Λογομάθεια), a multimedia CD-ROM
for practicing vocabulary, grammar and syntax of Modern Greek,
by Marita Roussou, Dipl. Eng., M.Sc., University of Toronto.
Reception sponsored by the National Bank of Greece followed the event.
The one hundred years of the modern Olympic games
Dr. Georgiadis, Dean of the International Olympic Academy in Athens,
is an expert on the history of the Olympic Games. He visited Toronto
and gave a lecture on
"The one hundred years of the modern Olympic games", on
Sunday, March 10, 1996, at the
George Ignatieff Theater, Trinity College, University of Toronto.
The seminar was organised by HCAAO and
sponsored by the School of Physical and Health Education,
University of Toronto, the Canadian Institute of Balkan Studies
and the National Bank of Greece.
During the lecture a series of slides on the first
modern Olympic games in Athens (1896) was also presented.
A music and dance presentation took place on
Sunday, February 25, 1996, 2 p.m., at the
Royal Conservatory Concert Hall, 273 Bloor West, Toronto.
Dimitra Marangozi, pianist and member of the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM),
presented contemporary Greek works by Hadjidakis, Kalomoiris and Constantinidis.
The music was accompanied by dance by the
Hellenic-Canadian Performance Group, under the choreographic direction
of Prof. Nota Klentrou, Brock University, member of HCAAO.

ages 4-18, who have been involved in folk dancing since they attended
